Frequently Asked Questions

What is Screen-Free Wisdom?

Screen-Free Wisdom is an intergenerational storytelling project started by a teenager to collect real-life advice from the “last offline generation.” We’re gathering short stories and reflections from older adults about how they handled loneliness, friendship, tough times, and growing up...before phones and social media took over.  The project was dreamed up by a 16 year old and has since been endorsed by faculty from numerous universities, including the University of San Diego, UCLA, Portland State University, University of California at San Diego, and Princeton University.

Who can participate?

Anyone who grew up before smartphones, social media, or 24/7 screens. If you have a story or piece of advice from your teen years, especially something that might help a young person today, we’d love to hear from you.

Why are you collecting these stories?

Teens today are more connected than ever, but also lonelier than ever. Many don’t know how to build friendships face-to-face, or what to do when they’re overwhelmed, sad, or feeling left out. Your story can help remind them that they’re not alone and that life does get better.

What kind of story should I share?

Anything real and heartfelt from your own teen years. What did you do when you felt lonely or left out as a teen? How did you calm yourself when you were upset or overwhelmed? Was there a time in your teens when things felt tough, but turned out OK? What helped you get through it? What do you wish someone had told you in high school?  You don’t need to be a great writer or speaker. Just be yourself!

How do I share my story?

You can share your story in whatever way feels easiest. You can text, email, or even leave a voicemail:

  • Text: (+1) 619-379-1034

  • Email: advice@screenfreewisdom.org

  • Call and leave a voicemail: (+1) 619-379-1034

  • Website: You can even head to the "Participate" tab on this website and submit your answers on the form there.

Do I need to give my name or personal information?

No. We don’t collect any personal details unless you choose to include them. You can remain completely anonymous.

Will someone contact me after I share?

Nope. There are no callbacks or follow-ups unless you specifically request it. This is a one-time, safe, and simple contribution.

How will my story be used?

Your story will be part of a growing archive of wisdom for teens shared through school programs, teen mental health projects, and curated collections both online and in print. It may also be featured in future materials (always respectfully and anonymously, unless you give permission otherwise).

Is there a deadline?

No formal deadline yet—but the sooner we hear from you, the sooner your story can help someone who really needs it.

Where can I learn more?

Visit our homepage at www.screenfreewisdom.org.  You’ll soon find examples of stories, updates on our goal of 10,000 messages, and more ways to get involved.

Why does this matter so much?

Because behind every teen glued to a phone is someone craving real connection.Your story might be the one that helps them take a breath… feel understood… or even find hope.
